How can my child join?
You can register your child for beavers on to our waiting list from birth. please click on "Contact Us" in the main menu. You can also place your child on any sections waiting list.
How old do you have to be?
The youngest section is the Beaver Colony, where you can start age 6 if we have space available. Then we have a Cub Pack 8 to 10 1/2 and a Scout Troop10 1/2 to 14. Between the ages of 13 and 14 the Scouts will be offered the opportunity to join Explorer Scouts, which meet in St Ives. they can also become young leaders within sections.
How can adults help?
All families with children in our Group are encouraged to help where they can. This can be from helping at a weekly meeting or offering to teach your hobby to a section or group of children. You could also volunteer to become a uniformed Leader, a non-uniformed helper or join the Executive Committee. All help is gratefully received whether it is a one off offer or regular support. Please come and talk to us about what you could do or send us a message through the Contact Us Page.
When and where do you meet?
Each Section has weekly meetings during term time, plus a whole host of other activities and events, mostly based at the School Hall.
Will my child be able to go camping?
Scout Association rules limit the length of time Beaver Scouts can be in the care of our Group to a maximum of 24 hours at a time. Beavers can now sleep under canvas so are able to join in with the Cubs and Scouts but we usually sleep in a building. We normally have 1 or 2 Sleepovers locally every year.
Cub Scouts can go away for longer periods, usually over the course of a weekend, and sleep in tents or buildings. We have our own tents, which Cubs can use and usually aim to camp at least twice a year. All cooking is supervised by adults in our own Mess Tents on a series of stoves. Camps can be anywhere in the country.
Scouts can camp for longer and, whether it’s a Group tent or their own, are expected to pitch their own tents and to do some of their own cooking. Our Scout Troop is very active and camps range from a few days locally to a week or longer much further field.
What is the subscription money for?
The majority of the subscription fee is used to cover basic running costs, such as rent, insurance and membership fees for all the children and adults. It also covers training costs (e.g. First Aid & Food Hygiene) and uniforms for the leaders. Funds are allocated by the Leaders overseen by the Executive Committee. The money is also used to cover the costs of running weekly meetings. It may also be used towards the cost of certain activities such as entry fees or to subsidise trips out. The rest of the money is spent on equipment – anything from a play parachute to tents, cooking pans to gas stoves and first aid kits to compasses.
